제주는 바다 한 가운데 화산섬이라는 천혜의 환경을 지닌다. 그 중에서도 성산은 동쪽에 위치하여 바다에 면하고 암석이 솟아 있는 바다와 맞닿아 있는 터이다.

우리는 제주가 가지고 있는 자연과 사용자가 상호 관계하고 전통성과 지역주의적 감성이 묻어나는 공간이 되기를 바랐다. 첫번째 방법으로 장소의 특성을 시각화하는 행위이다.

장구한 역사를 품고 있는 자연의 언어를 경청하는 것으로 제주 바람의 결, 돌의 물성, 빛의 구조 등을 깊이 사유하여 새로운 시어로 겸손히 땅과 건축 위에 자리하고자 하였다.
두번째는 상업적 특성으로 공간의 사용자는 고객이다. 수 많은 제주의 카페 중 이 곳으로의 방문을 유도해야 했는데, 그 방법으로 풍광에 대한 배려와 제주 자연의 물성을 현상으로서 낯설게 보여주는 방법을 택하였다.

건축의 외부 재료는 투명하기에 바다와 하늘 사이에 삽입되어 빛의 세기에 따라 낮엔 자연을 투영하고 밤엔 내부를 비춘다. 내부에서의 투명한 유리는 내외부의 시각적 연결에 탁월하며 정오를 전후로 빛을 머금은 바다와 푸른 하늘은 곧 내부로 스며든다. 건축은 바다와 축을 이어 1층은 카페(BAR)와 산책로 2층은 카페(HALL)와 테라스, 그리고 1층으로 연결되는 외부계단으로 구성 되어있다. 외부의 블록과 내부 가구, 벽 등은 화산석으로 묵직하고 투박한 제주의 토속적 심미성을 내포한다.

1층에 진입하면 자연의 산책로가 펼쳐진다. 공간 쌓기로 인한 좌측의 진입로는 아열대 지역 특유의 ‘빛의 길’을 지나게 되는데 시간의 흐름에 따라 매번 다른 장면이 펼쳐지며, 바다의 정반대인 서쪽의 면을 마주한다. 이 공간은 작은 천(川)을 두고 벽을 열어 바다의 공간이라는 점을 다시 한 번 상기시키며 붉은 노을을 담는 물의 그릇이 되어준다. 다시 북쪽으로 거닐면 참억새, 감귤, 유채꽃으로 이루어진 넓은 정원이 자연의 창을 통해 보여지며 외부의 산책로로 연결된다.

산책로를 지나고 하늘로 연결되는 듯 한 중앙계단을 지나 2층에 들어서면 바다와 축을 함께하는 패브릭 오브제를 마주한다. 남, 북 쪽에 창을 열어 맞바람이 들게 하고 예로부터 바람이 잘 통하는 ‘마’ 소재를 사용하였다.
이 얇디 얇은 천을 통해 제주의 바람을 내부로 끌어들여 시각적으로 직조하였다.

바다에 인접한 상업공간들은 창가 자리를 사수하기 위한 고객들의 보이지 않는 사투가 펼쳐지기 마련이다. 창가에 인접한 후면은  단차를 조성하여 레벨차로 인해 바다의 풍광을 조망할 수 있도록 배려하였다. 그 후면은 중정을 배치하여 제주의 빛과 대나무숲을 느끼면서 편한 좌석을 통해 조망이 없는 좌석을 배려하고자 하였다. 창의 대부분이 동쪽이라 자칫 차가울 수 있는 공간은 중정을 통해 제주의 빛과 조경으로 맑으면서 따듯한 공간이 될 수 있게 하였다.

화장실은 덧칠하지 않은 자연의 공간으로 외부의 조경을 내부로 끌어들여 비우되, 비움으로서 자연으로 가득 찬 공간이 되었다. 낮에는 파란하늘과 꽃, 밤에는 노을로 가득한 공간으로 시시각각 변모한다.

이처럼 이 공간은 제주의 돌, 바다, 바람, 하늘, 빛, 나무 등 제주의 풍광을 일상적인 물상으로서 자연을 끌어안고, 비일상적인 현상이자 동태로서 낯설지만 늘 존재하는 자연의 생태와 소멸함을 보여주고자 하였다.

Jeju Island, a volcanic island surrounded by sea, possesses a uniquely blessed natural environment. Among its regions, Seongsan, located on the eastern coast, faces the ocean with rugged rock formations that rise directly from the water.

Our intention was to create a space where visitors could experience the deep connection between Jeju’s natural elements and human presence — a place that carries the island’s regional and traditional sensibility. To achieve this, we approached the design in two ways.

The first approach was to visualize the characteristics of the site itself. By listening to the language of nature that holds the island’s long history, we sought to humbly root the architecture within the land, inspired by the texture of Jeju’s wind, the materiality of its volcanic stone, and the structure of its light.

The second approach recognized the space’s commercial nature — a café where visitors are the key users. Among countless cafés scattered across Jeju, we needed to create one that draws people in. The method was to express Jeju’s natural phenomena — its scenery, materials, and atmosphere — in a way that feels unfamiliar yet captivating.

The exterior of the building, made of transparent material, sits between the sea and sky, reflecting nature by day and illuminating from within by night. Inside, the transparent glass blurs boundaries, creating a strong visual connection between interior and exterior. Around midday, the light-filled sea and blue sky blend seamlessly into the interior. Architecturally, the building aligns with the ocean: the first floor consists of a café (BAR) and a walking path, while the second floor includes another café (HALL), a terrace, and an exterior staircase leading back down. The use of volcanic stone — in the exterior blocks, walls, and furniture — conveys Jeju’s grounded and rugged aesthetic identity.

Upon entering the first floor, visitors are greeted by a natural promenade. The left-side passage, shaped through the layering of spaces, creates a “path of light” characteristic of subtropical regions, where the scene changes throughout the day as light shifts. Facing west — the opposite of the sea — the wall opens to reveal a small stream, serving as a vessel for the red sunset reflected on the water. Continuing northward, visitors encounter a wide garden filled with silver grass, tangerines, and canola blossoms, visible through a natural “window” that leads back to the outdoor walkway.

Ascending the central staircase, which feels as if it connects directly to the sky, one reaches the second floor, where a fabric installation aligned with the sea axis comes into view. Openings to the north and south allow the wind to pass through, and the traditional Korean fabric ma — known for its breathability — was used to bring Jeju’s wind visually into the space, weaving it like thread.

In commercial spaces facing the sea, window seats often become sites of silent competition among visitors. To resolve this, the area behind the windows was designed with slight level differences, allowing guests seated further back to still enjoy an unobstructed view of the ocean. Behind this zone, a courtyard was introduced — filled with Jeju’s sunlight and bamboo groves — creating a comfortable environment for seats without direct views, while softening the eastern light that might otherwise make the interior feel cold. The result is a bright yet warm atmosphere shaped by natural light and landscaping.

The restroom was designed as a raw, untouched space that embraces nature by emptying rather than filling. The exterior landscape extends inward, turning emptiness into fullness — a space alive with nature. By day, it is filled with blue skies and flowers; by night, it glows with the colors of the sunset.

In this way, the space embraces the elements of Jeju — stone, sea, wind, sky, light, and trees — not as decorative motifs but as living presences. It reveals the island’s ever-changing ecology — a landscape both ordinary and extraordinary — where nature’s essence and its quiet cycles of creation and disappearance coexist.
